Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Sequel Courts Don't Breathe Director

Fede Alvarez is currently the favourite for The Girl in the Spider's Web.

Sony Pictures is courting Fede Alvarez to helm the sequel to 2011's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Variety reports that Alvarez is the current favourite to direct The Girl in The Spider's Web, thanks to his last successful picture for the studio, the horror/thriller Don't Breathe.

The Girl in The Spider's Web is based off the novel by David Lagercrantz (who took over the series after its original author Stieg Larsson passed away), and focuses on Lizbeth Salander (played by Rooney Mara in the original) and Mikael Blomkvist (played by Daniel Craig in the original) as they uncover a web of government spies. There's no firm word yet as to whether the original stars will return.

Alvarez is also known for his gristly and rather excellent 2013 reboot of The Evil Dead.
