Dr. Strange Opens Bigger Than Thor, Cap and Ant-Man

Trolls debuts in second, Hacksaw Ridge third.

Doctor Strange had a strong debut at the domestic box office, earning an estimated $85 million during its opening weekend.

As noted by Variety, Marvel's latest film had a larger domestic debut than Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Ant-Man, eclipsing their opening weekends of $65.7 million, $65.1 million and $57.2 million, respectively. As such, the film now ranks as having the tenth biggest opening of the MCU's fourteen films, right behind Thor: The Dark World's $85.7 million weekend haul.

Doctor Strange had a solid start on Friday, earning $32.6 million. The film also had a strong international debut last week, earning $86 million in 33 territories. It also debuted this weekend in China with $44 million. For our thoughts on the latest entry in the MCU, read IGN's Doctor Strange review.

Trailing far behind in second place is Dreamworks Animation's Trolls, which debuted with an estimated $45.6 million. The animated film, which features the voices of Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick, outpaced Hacksaw Ridge, as Mel Gibson's new World War II drama starring Andrew Garfield placed third with $14.8 million.
