Atlanta: Season 1 Finale Review

Share.

Tonight's gonna be weird.

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

On one hand, Atlanta ended its first season with an episode very much in tone with the series, telling a fairly self-contained and entertaining story. On the other hand, it felt like there was some more overt acknowledgement that this was a season finale, due to a couple of notable events.

First off, Paper Boi is going on tour! It’s a nice win for Paper Boi and Earn, and seems to indicate that maybe things are going in the right direction – underlined by Paper Boi actually giving Earn a bunch of cash as his manager’s fee.

The other moment of note was that ending, as we saw the truth about where Earn lives when he’s not staying with Van and the harsh reality of a guy who has so little to his name, he’s staying in a storage locker. Of course, Paper Boi’s success could lead to much greener pastures for Earn, so even while the episode ended on this melancholy note, there was cause for optimism.

Before all that though was the search for Earn’s jacket, which was a great little adventure in its own right, which included some very funny moments. The contradictory words of the dude whose house Earn woke up at (“It’s like I f**k wit ya, but I don’t f**k wit ya!”) was a standout, but it was outdone by Earn’s interaction with a stripper, as he tried to describe the body type of the woman who might know where his jacket is. “I don’t know the titty median here” was probably the best of many lines in this sequence.

The payoff to the jacket hunt – with Earn finding the guy wearing it, only to see him shot and killed by an army of cops – was hysterical. Sure, I think we all realized what was about to happen as the guy ran out of the house and Earn recognized what he was wearing, but that made it even funnier. Donald Glover was wonderful here, as Earn awkwardly asked if they could look through the pockets of the corpse - “There’s like a secret pocket in the front.”

The finale was structured a bit oddly. With the culmination of the jacket search, it felt like the episode was reaching its natural end point, yet there were several other scenes that followed rather than one big beat afterward – from Earn finding out he’d actually left the key he really needed in a safe place, to Paper Boi giving him the money, to Earn giving Van the money, to the storage unit reveal. But despite that "Oh, I guess there's still a few more minutes?" feeling, it all added to a well-done look at Earn’s life (and financial situation) from a very offbeat, very Atlanta viewpoint.

The Verdict

Atlanta ended its fascinating first season with a very amusing “gotta find something important” hunt for Earn that included a lot of really strong comedic material – followed by some poignant moments that involved Earn getting some hints that he might be moving in the right direction, even as we saw just how much he’s been struggling up until this point.
