Animal Crossing: New Leaf Update Introduces Amiibo Support

Turning over a new leaf.

Nintendo is introducing amiibo support to Animal Crossing: New Leaf with a free update, available now.

Players scan their amiibo or card, which will prompt a character called Wispy to summon the card or figure into their town. In a twist, Nintendo also revealed that amiibo figures from other Nintendo franchises can be used in-game, including Zelda and Splatoon.

New items have been introduced alongside new characters.

New items have been introduced alongside new characters.

For example, scanning the Splatoon Squid sisters amiibos will import Cece and Viché into Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Items specific to Splatoon will also generate in-game, and can be obtained by dropping by the respective amiibo's home.

A handful of Legend of Zelda amiibo will also work in Animal Crossing, including the new figurines coming next month. Medli, Ganon, and Epona are among some of the characters now available in New Leaf, with new Zelda items including a special Breath of the Wild costume for Link.

There will be 50 new characters in total, to coincide with 50 new amiibo cards released on December 2. Nintendo has also created a special new area in the game called Harvey's campground, which enables players to meet up with the new characters in-game.
