Was The Walking Dead Teasing Rick Losing His Hand?

Did the Season 7 premiere wink at an old comic book storyline?

At this point, had it happened, it probably would have been the most tame thing to happen on The Walking Dead's ultra-violent Season 7 premiere, but could it be that the show was teasing Rick losing his hand?

In the comics, the Governor had the honor of taking Rick's hand but that never came to pass on the show. With all the talk of Rick's "right hand" and Negan menacingly holding Rick's axe for most of the episode, it certainly seemed like Rick was about to become an involuntary southpaw.

The Walking Dead executive producer and director Greg Nicotero briefly addressed this theory during a conference call today, saying that it wasn't intentional...at first.

"That was not done consciously," he told IGN. "I think the right hand stuff was really written to play into what was going to happen at the end of the episode with Rick and Carl. But when we cut it together, and you see the axe go up, you could see it there and it wasn't something we had planned on. So it became something that we leaned into as we were editing the episode and playing it up. But it wasn't a conscious thing to make everyone think 'Oh, they're gonna cut Rick's hand off.'"

"But you know, that's me," he added. "I don't know. [Showrunner, episode writer] Scott Gimple may have a different take on that, but I know when we were prepping and shooting the episode there was no decision about teasing the audience and make them feel like Rick's losing his hand. I think there was enough going on in that episode as is."
