"Pennzoil Platinum. Hello, baby."
"DUI" was a ferocious, action-packed episode that felt like it closed out a four-episode mini arc for the season. With Ruby and Kelly killing the "children," Ash getting revenge on the Delta 88 for killing his father (using Brock's bull-riding words to help stay atop the car!) and Pablo finally having a confrontation with the Necronomicon, this one snipped off some story threads so that we could get to Baal - who exploded from the hell portal right at the end.
I don't think this means Ash will be leaving Elk Grove or that there's a change of setting coming, but with Baal in the picture -- as this franchise's first true "big bad" -- the show's entering new territory. The book is gone as the goal and now there's an actual character coming to take its place - a target for Ash's saw and boomstick.
"DUI" crackled with fun, gross energy as Ash's tried to repair his father's splattered head while his "classic" car kidnapped Pablo and took off. Ash then saddled up with the severely inebriated "drunk driving angel" Chet for a handful of funny scenes where Chet, just by hearing an abridged version of Ash's entire demon-filled predicament, got instantly on board. Chet's a boozing bonehead, but I appreciate that he's also loyal ("Until the wheels fall off!" - is what he'll probably mutter when he dies) and occasionally smart. He's not 100% chucklehead, which is good because it's tricky to pair someone like Ash up with someone who might be dumber than he is.
Naturally, we knew the Necronomicon was conning Pablo into sending it back to hell, but I'm glad that the decision to toss the book in the trunk was made by both him and Ash together, and not just a mistake made by Pablo that he might the rest of the season regretting. Pablo was already in such a delicate state because of his visions that it really wouldn't suit him to get more mopey. Here, even though it was a trick, he felt empowered and, in the very least, he can split the blame with "Could things get any worse?" Ash.
Pairing the final two action scenes together and cutting back and forth between them was an awesome idea. I liked switching from the car battle in the demolition derby to Ruby and Kelly shooting and slashing their way through the demon kids. Victories for both sides! Another reason why I felt like this one finished off a story that began in the season premiere. The "children" are gone and Ash finally reconciled with his dad. The "clench those cheeks nice and tight" callback really was a great moment too, letting us know that Ash was able to listen to, and use, the only goofy words of advice his father ever gave him.
It was worth it all the more to hear Ash scream out "I'm hard, dad! I'm hard!"
The Verdict
"DUI" fittingly felt like the climax for the fist part of the season. It's not quite the halfway point, but a lot of story got cleared away to make room for Baal - who we only caught a small fiery glimpse of right at the end. It was funny, violent, and featured Ash battling his own demonic Delta. What more could you want?
