6 Ways You Can Use Controllers to Play the Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch has a very unique controller setup that differs from previous consoles - giving users several ways to find an optimal gaming setup.

The main controllers include the two removable Joy-Con Controllers, and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers. They can be used in any of the methods listed below.

  • Setup 1: Joy-Con Grip Controller + Television

With this setup, users can use the Joy-Con Grip as a controller that each of the two Joy-Con Controllers are inserted into, with a space occupying where the portable screen would normally go - allowing you to hold both of the Joy-Con Controllers in one main controller shell.

  • Setup 2: Joy-Con Controller + Switch

In this setup meant for personal or on-the-go gaming, a user can play their Nintendo Switch similar to the Wii U Gamepad off-screen play: with a Joy-Con Controllers on either side of the Nintendo Switch screen.

  • Setup 3: Joy-Con Controllers  + Switch

In addition to being able to play with the Nintendo Switch screen with a Joy-Con controllers attatched, users can disconnect the Switch from the Joy-Con Controllers, and use the Switch's kickstand as a small on-the-go screen for single player gaming.

  • Setup 4: Single Joy-Con Controller + Switch

Both of the Joy-Con Controller L and Joy-Con Controller R are nearly symetrical (both include an analog control stick, trigger, shoulder, and four main buttons) and as such can be used independently, allowing two users to play multiplayer games where each player uses one of the Joy-Con Controllers. It's likely that - much like the Wii Remote, the Joy-Con Controllers can be used vertical or horizontal depending on the game.

  • Setup 5: Nintendo Switch Pro Controller + Television

Instead of using the Joy-Con Grip Controller when playing while the main Switch console is plugged into the dock, users can opt to use the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller for a more classic feel.

  • Setup 6: Nintendo Switch Pro Controller + Switch

The above method can also be used on the go, where the Switch screen is used with the kickstand, and the Joy-Con Controller are not needed to play, where the user opts to use the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller instead.
