July's Top Sales Belonged to Nintendo's 3DS

People love hunting monsters.

UPDATE: We've learned the public NPD release has been delayed until August 22, so the top 10 list promised in the article below won't be making it into the story today.

The top-selling video game hardware for the month of July was Nintendo's 3DS family of handhelds. Nintendo issued a statement crediting its success to the release of Monster Hunter Generations and the price drop of the 2DS console.

The success of Pokemon Go no doubt helped Nintendo take the month. Nintendo reported in its release both Pokemon Alpha Ruby and Omega Sapphire made reappearances on the top 10 list for software sales, at numbers 8 and 10, respectively. Pokemon X and Y also saw a 200 percent increase in sales from the same period the year previous.

Earlier in the month, Microsoft issued a statement saying its Xbox One was July 2016's best-selling console. Microsoft issued the statement a week ahead of the public NPD report. We've reached out to Microsoft for clarification.

Those public numbers go live later today, so we'll have a firm grasp on what landed where on the monthly chart.

The NPD Group recently shook up the way it reports software sales, adding digital distribution to its metrics beginning last month. This new system also pushed the NPD public release back a week, to the third Thursday of each month.

When the numbers become public, we'll update this story with the list of the top 10.
