Director Leaves Gambit for DC's Dark Universe Film

X-Men spinoff still aiming for January start.

Edge of Tomorrow and The Bourne Identity's Doug Liman has reportedly left the director's chair of Gambit for the supernatural superhero pic Dark Universe, Warner Bros.' and DC Films' planned feature film version of Justice League Dark.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that 20th Century Fox's Gambit has indeed lost its director, but that Channing Tatum remains attached to star. THR adds that a search is underway for another director -- the X-Men spinoff's third-- to make a January start date.

According to Variety, Dark Universe "is an ensemble focused which speaks to one of (Liman's) early hits Go, which dealt with a similar ensemble. The film will play a major role in the new D.C. Cinematic Universe."

Guillermo del Toro had originally been attached to direct Dark Universe, but will now produce the film along with Scott Rudin. Del Toro also wrote a recent draft of the script, with Variety reporting that the team's lineup includes John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon.

Justice League Dark is also getting turned into an upcoming animated DC Universe Original Movie.
