If you haven't heard, Marvel is prepping another major comic book relaunch once Civil War II wraps up this fall. The new Marvel NOW relaunch will usher in a wave of new comics as Marvel's creators explore a new status quo called "Divided We Stand."
To help keep pace with all these announcements, we've put together a roundup of all the new and relaunched comics that will be a part of Marvel NOW. We'll keep updating this list as more books are revealed.
Creative Team: Jason Aaron & Olivier Coipel
Jason Aaron's already massive Thor saga is about to get even bigger this fall. Not only that, he'll be joined by legendary Thor artist Olivier Coipel for this new chapter. The Unworthy Thor will allow the journey of the Odinson as he seeks out Ultimate Thor's hammer and tries to prove himself a worthy thunder god once more. This series will run alongside the current, Jane Foster-centric Mighty Thor comic rather than replacing it.
Aaron told io9 that the new series will take the fallen thunder god into some dark places. "I’ve always written him as a guy who wakes up every morning, look at that hammer and know he would not know if was going to pick it up. It was always questioning his own worthiness, which is what made him such a great god the first time. So now he’s at the point where that’s been taken away. He failed for a reason we still don’t quite understand. He dropped the hammer and hasn’t been able to pick it up since. So then we go to a pretty dark place. A darker, more desperate, more driven version. The real fun of Thor is that he wields an axe now. He’s still out trying to fight the fight, but first he’s gotta be off on his own."
Creative Team: Charles Soule, Jeff Lemire & Aaron Kuder
Marvel has finally revealed what the ominously titled "Death of X" storyline involves. This four-issue mini-series (co-written by Uncanny Inhumans writer Charles Soule and Extraordinary X-Men writer Jeff Lemire) will focus on the growing feud between the X-Men and Inhumans. But rather than chronicling the final battle between these two races, Death of X will flashback to the immediate aftermath of Secret Wars. Readers will see how tensions between the two teams developed as the Terrigen Mist cloud began claiming mutant lives, and they'll finally learn the full story behind the death of Cyclops.
“We’ll definitely see some characters who have been missing in action since the series launch,” Lemire told Entertainment Weekly. “We’ll answer the question of where certain mutants have been, and what’s happened to them. Cyclops is the big one, he’s the one we’ve said was dead and that’s all we’ve really said. His death was very controversial, so obviously that’ll be a big part of the story we’re telling here.”
Creative Team: Brian Michael Bendis & Stefano Caselli
Marvel will be relaunching Invincible Iron Man after Civil War II. While Brian Bendis will remain on as writer, he'll be joined by new artist Stefano Caselli. And the big news is that Tony Stark won't be the lead protagonist anymore. Instead, teen genius Riri Williams will be taking up the mantle of Iron Man. The fate of Tony himself is unclear, though the issue #1 cover suggests that Riri will at least be joined by a holographic A.I. version of Mr. Stark.
Bendis told Time about the inspirations for the new heroine, saying, "One of the things that stuck with me when I was working in Chicago a couple of years ago on a TV show that didn’t end up airing was the amount of chaos and violence. And this story of this brilliant, young woman whose life was marred by tragedy that could have easily ended her life—just random street violence—and went off to college was very inspiring to me. I thought that was the most modern version of a superhero or superheroine story I had ever heard. And I sat with it for awhile until I had the right character and the right place."
Creative Team: Zac Gorman & Will Robson
Marvel's goofy team of C-List heroes will be returning later this year. Flatman, Mr. Immortal, Big Bertha and Doorman will all return, though it seems Squirrel-Girl has bigger fish to fry these days. The new series will be written by Zac Gorman (Rick and Morty) and drawn by Will Robson (Star-Lord).
“This is my first Marvel book, my first superhero book." Gorman told The Nerdist. I’ve always loved the C-list characters, the obscure characters, and the comedy stuff. So, when I heard ‘Great Lakes Avengers,’ I immediately kind of latched on to that and thought it’d be a great book for me. But the Great Lakes region is where I’ve spent the majority of my life. I’ve lived in Detroit area and Chicago and the west side of Michigan and all around the Great Lakes, so it kind of seemed like a perfect fit right off the bat for me. So I just hit the ground running and started coming up with ideas for how I could make the series fresh again.
Creative Team: Mark Waid & Humberto Ramos
Marvel has finally regained the rights to the "Champions" name, and they're bringing back that classic super-team in a new form. The new Champions comic will be an ongoing series focused on various teen heroes like Ms. Marvel, the Totally Awesome Hulk, Miles Morales and Cyclops. Mark Waid is writing the new series with Humberto Ramos drawing, but it's not clear if Waid will remain on board All-New, All-Different Avengers.
Waid told Entertainment Weekly, "When we were growing up, the general perception was it takes adults to fix the world. Kids can do little things, but basically you have to wait till you grow up to make the big choices and the big decisions. Well, Mark Zuckerberg would disagree with you. Some of the other young trend-breaking scientists that are coming to light, online especially, would beg to differ with you. Those are the inspirations, as much as anybody else, for the idea that we don’t have to wait until we grow up to be Tony Stark or Captain America to make a difference in this world. We’ll find our way, and we’ll find our own way."
Creative Team: Al Ewing & Paco Medina
The current New Avengers creative team (writer Al Ewing and artist Paco Medina) will be debuting a new squad of Avengers in the aftermath of Civil War II. This very patriotic team will be led by Sunspot and feature heroes like Red Hulk, Squirrel Girl, Cannonball, Danielle Cage and a new Iron Patriot. Their mandate is to defend America in the wake of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s internal struggles.
“We wanted a couple of members that’d speak to the U.S. in the title — hence super-scientist and supporting player Dr. Toni Ho stepping up to the main team as the new Iron Patriot, and General Ross waiting in the wings as the Red Hulk,” Ewing told The Washington Post. “And, of course, Danielle Cage, the Captain America of about thirty years in the future, who’ll be joining us for at least the first arc, as an enemy from her time comes to ours to stir up trouble.”
