Blizzard Entertainment appears to be teasing a new Overwatch hero, and the company's recent hints at the character line up with recent rumors and leaks that have suggested the hero's existence.
Today, the Overwatch Twitter account posted a communications record from Angela Ziegler — that's Mercy — to Soldier: 76 and Reaper. The file details a rifle that uses Mercy's biotic healing mechanism intended for "medics in the field."
The gun is designed by Torbjorn, who is adamant Mercy's technology only be used for healing. Mercy, on the other hand, is worried about the "slippery slope to modifications that will inevitably result in a weaponized version of [her] technology." From the little information given, it sounds like a sniper rifle designed to heal.
There's been plenty of chatter about a rumored sniper character called Sombra; information about her has been leaking out for a while now. A character holding a sniper appeared in a Gamespot documentary on Overwatch, which sounds like it lines up with the information the Overwatch Twitter account just revealed. The game's director Jeff Kaplan also recently told Eurogamer that players have not found all of the hints concerning Sombra and who she is.
Eagle-eyed fans have spotted audio files from Reaper that mention Sombra, as well as documents in Dorado with the same name.
It's been rumored that Sombra is Pharah's mother Ana, who is said to have died but could have seen a similar fate as Soldier: 76 and Reaper, who were also once presumed dead. In artwork depicting the game's backstory, Ana is shown carrying a sniper rifle.
