Marvel will be relaunching Invincible Iron Man after Civil War II this fall. And while Brian Michael Bendis will still be writing the series, Tony Stark won't be the star anymore. Instead, teen genius Riri Williams will be taking up the mantle of Iron Man.
The relaunched series will also feature a new artist. Stefano Caselli (All-New Inhumans) will be taking the reins of the series as Riri comes to terms with her new position.
Bendis spoke to Time about this major status quo change, explaining his inspiration for creating Riri. "One of the things that stuck with me when I was working in Chicago a couple of years ago on a TV show that didn’t end up airing was the amount of chaos and violence. And this story of this brilliant, young woman whose life was marred by tragedy that could have easily ended her life—just random street violence—and went off to college was very inspiring to me. I thought that was the most modern version of a superhero or superheroine story I had ever heard. And I sat with it for awhile until I had the right character and the right place."
Bendis continued, "As we’ve been slowly and hopefully very organically adding all these new characters to the Marvel Universe, it just seemed that sort of violence inspiring a young hero to rise up and act, and using her science acumen, her natural born abilities that are still raw but so ahead of where even Tony Stark was at that age, was very exciting to me."
Bendis was also quick to point out that fans shouldn't assume this announcement spoils the outcome of Civil War II or the fate of Tony Stark. "More people are going to be upset that they think they know the ending to Civil War II now than anything we just talked about. But I can tell you just because we’re hearing what we’re saying doesn’t know you mean how Civil War II ends. We’re not telling you the end, at all."
So what will become of Tony in the aftermath of Marvel's latest big event, and how big a role will he play in the new series? Bendis noted that Tony is dealing with a lot of stress right now, between the death of his best friend in Civil War II #1, the instability of his company in the pages of Invincible Iron Man and the reveal of his true biological parents (which should be happening soon in International Iron Man). All of this will feed into the character's new status quo during the Marvel NOW relaunch. Based on the issue #1 cover above, it seems that Riri will be joined by a holographic A.I. version of Tony similar to the F.R.I.D.A.Y. construct that's been appearing Invincible Iron Man.
It also remains to be seen whether Bendis and Alex Maleev's International Iron Man will continue after Civil War II. Given that both Riri and Victor Von Doom were prominently featured in last week's "Divided We Stand" teaser, we're assuming that Marvel will have some sort of companion Iron Man comic with Doom as the lead protagonist.
Look for Invincible Iron Man #1 to hit stores in fall 2016.
