Ghostbusters Director Teases New Gadgets and Ghosts

Paul Feig reveals all.

Ghostbusters director Paul Feig has been talking about the treats he has in store for fans of the franchise in terms of new ghosts and gadgets being introduced in the film.

So read on for Feig's full report, just beware of MILD SPOILERS AHEAD

The Ghosts

“Several of our ghosts are murderers and bad people who have a very strong energy that was negative that they’ve brought back. Like the one that shoots the ectoplasm on Kristen [Wiig] in the trailers. You’ll find out that’s Gertrude Aldrich, who murdered all these servants, and her family – instead of turning her into the police – locked her in the basement of their mansion. So that ghost comes back and escapes.

"Then there’s another ghost they meet in the subway that’s a guy that was electrocuted in the electric chair and who is clearly, like a murderer.

“We’ve got a lot of humanoid ghosts that way but then I also wanted to have other creatures because my feeling was like the more he [the film’s villain] is energising stuff, he’s pulling weird stuff in from other places too. So we have one in this rock concert scene that’s a bit more kind of a demon-ish, alien-ish kind of creature. Because I didn’t want it all to be humanoid because I wanted to have fun with different things.”

The Gadgets

“When the movie first came out back then, it was really cool to watch them shoot those proton guns. Now it’s still cool but that thrill wears out quickly vs they then grow from there and they actually have side-arms and these more hand-held devices that they use. So they can actually get in there and grapple with ghosts and we have a set-piece in Time Square that is really fun that was very action-packed. And also wanted them to be able to fight stuntmen and be able to do real stunts.

“That to me was one of the first things when I decided to do it. I thought ‘Oh God – now I want to develop some more things!’ The idea of side-arms, the first thing I thought of was ‘proton-glove’ that you could put on and do something with. We just had so much fun – I had such a great production team. Jefferson Sage – who’s my production designer – brought on the most amazing artists and conceptual guys who are just inventing all this stuff… suddenly they’re bringing in these diagrams and drawings and artwork and you’re like a kid in a candy store then.

“We invented so many weapons we couldn’t use some of them! In the fight scene you’ll see Lesley Jones’ character has this big gun strapped onto her thigh, and we never got to use it. We had an embarrassment of riches.”
