The Muppets: "Going, Going, Gonzo" Review

The return of Gonzo the Great (Presented by Piggy Water)!

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The Muppets' busy sex lives took a welcome back seat this week in "Going, Going, Gonzo," as Gonzo took center stage in a sweet story about him pining for his glory days as a daredevil. It also used guest stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dave Grohl very well - though the pleasantly smug JGL seemed to end his cameo in an abruptly wacky way that seemed to suggest that - well - they didn't know how to write him out. Still, it was fun to see him claw that poker chips and scream "Gimme that Muppet money!"

The musical numbers that JGL and Grohl performed also nicely harkened back to the old, original Muppet Show - and the use of the Foo's "Learn to Fly" made for a great ending. One that featured Gonzo - who'd developed such cold feet about his cannon stunt that it actually got called off - heading up to he roof to prove that he could make the jump. Prove to himself, most importantly. since no one except Kermit was around to witness it. It was probably the best moment this show's done to date.

Oh, and Grohl and Animal's ending drum-off was also pretty epic. Again, nice incorporation of Grohl here.

The other story going on here, aside from Piggy trying to pimp her "Piggy Water" (which contains so much fat that FDA is considering labeling it "sauce") was Scooter overreacting to Gonzo's opening pratfall accident and thinking he needed to take life by the horns and live on the edge. It was fine. I feel like we've gotten a lot of Scooter over the past few episodes, so we've sort of reached Maximum Scoot here. Him freaking out over getting his ear pierced and thrashing the band was kind of enjoyable, but - again - I could use a break from the character.

There were other satisfyingly silly moments throughout - like Big Mean Carl screaming about Chex Mix, Sweetums screaming "NOOOOOOO!" after being put on Piggy's list, and JGL trying to explain who his character was in Looper. But it was really the Gonzo story that was the most successful element here. It nicely brought up the character's past while also, essentially, closing off that avenue of his life with one final hurrah.

The Verdict

"Going, Going, Gonzo" went for sweet instead of sassy and edgy and wound up being the new Muppets' best episode to date.
