Written by Mark Waid & Drawn by Humberto Ramos | Marvel
Civil War II has a few months left to go, but Marvel is steering right ahead with its latest big relaunch. By all accounts, Champions is shaping up to be the flagship title of Marvel NOW. It's the book that deals most directly with the new rift that's formed between the veteran heroes of the Marvel U. and the younger, more idealistic generation.
We're pretty psyched at the thought of Mark Waid writing a new team book that includes characters like Ms. Marvel, Miles Morales, Amadeus Cho and the young Cyclops. With any luck, this will be the teen superhero book Marvel needs in its lineup.
Written by Sara Vaughn & Drawn by Lan Medina | DC
As much as we're loving the DC Rebirth relaunch, it's not something that offers a tremendous amount of variety when it comes to the superhero genre. That responsibility is instead falling on the Young Animal imprint and DC's new wave of standalone mini-series. And of those mini-series, we're easily the most intrigued by Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love.
This new take on Deadman is anything but a traditional superhero comic. It has more in common with classic Victorian romance and ghost stories. In other words, the perfect DC book to celebrate the approach of Halloween.
Written & Drawn by Genndy Tartakovsky | Marvel
This mini-series spent a long time in limbo, but it's finally seeing the light of day just in time for the debut of Netflix's Luke Cage series. Whereas most Luke Cage comics try to create some distance between the hero and his blaxploitation roots, Cage! fully embraces those roots. This is Luke in all his flashy, '70s-era glory. And it's written and drawn by none other than Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky. If any book will have readers shouting out, "Sweet Christmas!", it's this one.
Written by Brian Azzarello & Drawn by Eduardo Risso | Image
Fans know to expect great things whenever Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso join forces on a comic. These are the creators that gave us the 100 Bullets saga, among other memorable books. And it doesn't sound like the duo will be guilty of revisiting old territory with Moonshine. This new series is set in Prohibition-era West Virginia and blends crime and the supernatural into one unique mix. Fans of the creators or good crime comics in general won't want to miss this one.
Written by Chuck Palahniuk & Drawn by Cameron Stewart | Dark Horse
For a first-time comic writer, Chuck Palahniuk sure exploited the medium to its full benefit on this Fight Club sequel. Plenty of credit goes to the ever-versatile and creative Cameron Stewart. This series looked gorgeous in its original form, so we can only imagine how much it improves thanks to Dark Horse's oversized Library Edition format. This isn't cheap, but for hardcore fans we have no doubt the price is worth it.
