Mario + Rabbids Prototype Was Made in Under 4 Weeks

"We truly wanted to show him gameplay."

When Ubisoft Milan pitched its idea for Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle to Nintendo, the team had just three and a half weeks to craft a playable demo before showing it to Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

"The first time we proposed the prototype to Miyamoto, we had only three weeks and a half to come up with a playable prototype, because we truly wanted to show him gameplay," creative director Davide Soliani said on the debut episode of IGN Expert Mode.

According to Soliani, when Miyamoto was shown what the team had created in such a short time, the legendary game designer said, "I'm impressed."

All the more astounding is the fact that the Mario and Luigi featured in the prototype were custom-created by Ubisoft Milan from the ground up. Soliani said Miyamoto kept asking him where he got the Mario and Luigi that were used in the prototype, and he told Miyamoto the team actually crafted the character models and their animations entirely from scratch.

Don't miss IGN's Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle review for our thoughts on the wonderfully weird XCOM-style Switch exclusive, and be sure to check out the full debut episode of IGN Expert Mode for even more from Soliani about his experience making a Mario-Rabbids crossover game in collaboration with Nintendo.

Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn to Develop Starsky & Hutch TV Reboot

New one-hour, buddy cop series in the works at Amazon.

Amazon has announced plans to put Starsky & Hutch back on the streets, steered by Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn.

The Prime Video project is being developed in conjunction with Sony Pictures Television Studios and is being described as a character-driven, one-hour police procedural and “a continuation of the original 1970s series.”

Gunn will be working with writing partners Mark Gunn and Brian Gunn.

“When I was a kid, Starsky & Hutch was the first ‘adult’ show I ever saw, and I fell in love,” said James Gunn in a statement. “It instilled in me a lifelong love of gritty street shows, of killer ’70s threads, and muscle cars. So when Neal Mortiz asked me if I wanted to be a part of an all new Starsky & Hutch on TV, I was instantly intrigued. I teamed up with the two writers I trusted most in the world to work with us, my brother Brian Gunn and my cousin Mark Gunn and together we came up with a show that I’m really proud of. At Amazon I believed we would have the most freedom to create something that is different, challenges the audience, and that strays outside the parameters of genre from time to time.”

Starsky & Hutch will be the first expedition into TV for James Gunn and his production company Troll Court Entertainment.

The original Starsky & Hutch series, which aired from 1975 to 1979, followed the crime-busting escapades of David Starsky and Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson as they tore up the fictional Bay City in Starsky’s iconic red Ford Gran Torino.

The TV series was previously adapted into a film starring Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson back in 2004 by director Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Old School).

For more on what James Gunn is up to, IGN spoke to him last month about Marvel's upcoming Captain Marvel film, as well as his very early plans for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Pokemon Go: Best Counters for Raikou and the Legendary Beasts

Legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Go have been promised from the get go. Its first trailer showed a hypothetical event featuring a massive battle against Mewtwo. This page includes a schedule of Legendary Pokemon Raids, the best way to take them down, and a List of Legendary Pokemon in Pokemon Go.

Click on the Pokemon's name to see the best way to defeat them!

Mewtwo  Sep. 6 - ? (EX Raids only)
Raikou Aug. 31 - Sep. 30 (Americas)
Suicune Aug. 31 - Sep. 30 (Asia-Pacific)
Entei Aug. 31 - Sep. 20 (Europe & Africa)

Raid Eggs are currently not in effect. It is unclear whether this is temporary while Niantic fixes bugs, or a permanent change. For now, Raids will start with no countdown or warning.

Niantic finally confirmed the arrival of Legendary Pokemon days before the first Live Event, Pokemon Go Fest in Chicago July 22, 2017.

Legendary Pokemon are only obtainable by defeating Legendary Pokemon Raids. Once defeated, Trainers will have a chance to capture the rare and powerful Pokemon much how they would a normal Raid Boss.
  • You'll know a soon-to-begin Raid will feature a Legendary Pokemon if the Raid Egg is dark blue
  • You will want the full 20 players if you want to make easy work of Legendary Pokemon.
  • Fewer can defeat them, at the very least six, but you need high-leveled Pokemon well-suited for the task.
  • Legendary Pokemon cannot defend Gyms, but they can battle enemy Gyms and Raid Bosses.
  • Base Capture Rate for Legendary Pokemon is only 3%.
  • Legendary Pokemon Buddy Distance is 20km per 1 candy.

Because Legendary Pokemon are so difficult to take down, you can find recommended counters to strategically up your chance of defeating them. However, if none of your counters are high CP (1,500+ at the very least, preferably 2000+) you may as well just use your highest CP Pokemon.

Because Legendary Pokemon have such a low capture rate at only 3%--Lugia only 2%-- you'll want to save your Golden Razz Berries and practice your Curve Balls to maximize your chance at catching a Legendary Pokemon. See the chart below made by Reddit user Epimetheos for a visualization of just how much the extra effort helps.

Medals awarded for catching certain Types of Pokemon, for example Bird Keeper for Flying-type Pokemon, will increase catch rate as well. To earn the Gold Medal, catch 200 of a specific Type of Pokemon.

Once in the process of catching the Legendary Pokemon:

  • Use a Golden Razz Berry for each attempt.
  • Use a Curve Ball if you're confident in your accuracy.
  • Only throw a  Premier Ball right after the Pokemon has attacked, so you can try to ensure your throw won't be interrupted.
  • Wait for the Pokemon to re-center if it has moved to an awkward spot.

Raikou is first appearing in the Americas August 31 - September 30. In Pokemon Gold and Silver, this Legendary Beast would appear in random areas of the map, only to run away to a different far away land when encountered. To somewhat mirror this mechanic, the Legendary Beasts in Pokemon Go will be available in different regions of the world at different times.

Raikou, as an Electric-type Pokemon, is only weak to one type:

Additionally, Ground-type Pokemon are resistant to Electric-type attacks. This makes the Ground- and Rock-Types Golem and Rhydon with Ground-type moves the most ideal counters to Raikou.

Steelix, with its Ground-type and super high defense, would make a decent anchor Pokemon.

Other Ground-type Pokemon, like Donphan, would be a great choice up against Raikou as well.

To somewhat mirror this mechanic, the Legendary Beasts in Pokemon Go will be available in different regions of the world at different times.

Suicune, as a Water-type Pokemon, is weak to the following types:

  • Electric
  • Grass

Exeggutor will resist Suicune's Water-type attacks and deal super effective damage with its Grass-type attacks. Though Zapdos won't resist Suicune, it will do an incredible amount of damage.

Venasaur would be a good choice, but may be susceptible to Suicune's possibly Psychic-type quick move. Raikou, Jolteon, Meganium, and other Electric- or Grass-type Pokemon are also respectable.

In Pokemon Gold and Silver, this Legendary Beast would appear in random areas of the map, only to run away to a different far away land when encountered. To somewhat mirror this mechanic, the Legendary Beasts in Pokemon Go will be available in different regions of the world at different times.

Entei, as a Fire-type Pokemon, is weak to quite a few types:

  • Ground
  • Rock
  • Water

As such, there are quite a few good counters against Entei. The most common of these is the Water-type Vaporeon, but Rock-type Pokemon, like Tryanitar are exceptional as well. Both are resistant to Fire-type attacks.

Dragonite, though it doesn't have any super-effective moves, is resistant to Entei's Fire-type attacks and is overall a well-rounded Pokemon. Omastar and Golem are again useful when up against Entei, as they are with many other Legendary Pokemon.

Mewtwo first appeared on August 14 during the Pikachu Outbreak in Yokohama. This Legendary Pokemon will begin appearing in Exclusive (EX) Raid Battles "in the coming weeks."  Mewtwo will only appear in Exclusive Raids.

Mewtwo, as a Pyschic-type Pokemon, is weak to the following types:

  • Dark
  • Ghost
  • Bug

Also worth noting is that Dark-type Pokemon are very resistant to Psychic-type moves, making the Dark- and Rock-type Tyranitar an ideal partner against Mewtwo.

Unfortunately, Mewtwo does have a 25% chance of having the Fighting-type Charge Move Focus Blast, which is super effective against Tyranitar. However, Tyranitar is resistant to Mewtwo's other possible Charge Attacks - so just be weary of which charge move the Mewtwo has.

Umbreon would be a good choice to put at the end of a team, as it has high survivability against Mewtwo - just be ready to dodge those Focus Blast attacks if it has them.

Pinser, Houndoom, and other Bug- and Dark-types are decent choices. Gengar, though it will do an impressive amount of damage, is weak to Mewtwo's Pyschic-type attacks and cannot survive long.

Zapdos began appearing on August 7, 2017, and will remain until August 14. It is speculated that Ho-Oh will appear once Zapdos is removed from Raids.

Zapdos, as an Electric- and Flying-type Pokemon, is weak to the following types:

These will do 1.4x the usual damage. Unlike the other two Legendary Birds, Zapdos does not have a dual weakness. Additionally, many Pokemon that know Ice-type attacks are weak to Electric-type moves, like the Water- and Ice-type Lapras, or aren't generally very strong, like Jynx. Remember that Flying-type Pokemon will take Super Effective damage from Zapdos we well.

Golem, a Ground- and Rock-type, will resist Zapdos' Electric-type attacks and dish out extra damage with Rock-type moves. Just make sure the Golem has Rock-type moves, as although Ground-type attacks are usually Super Effective against Electric-type Pokemon, Zapdos' Flying-type neutralizes the buff.

Tyranitar, though it isn't resistant to Zapdos, can still dish out a great deal of damage if its Charge Attack is Stone Edge. Piloswine will resist Zapdos and deal Super Effective damage with its Charge Attack Avalanche, but can't learn an Ice-type Fast Attack. Rhydon will resist Zapdos' attacks, and can learn Stone Edge, but Zapdos has resistance to both of it's fast attacks (the STAB on Mud Slap makes it the slightly better of the two).

Dragonite's Dragon-typing resistance and Flying-typing weakness allows it to sustain only neutral damage from Electric-type attacks, and though it can't deal Super Effective damage, it's still a generally strong contender in raids.

Moltres began appearing in Raids on July 31, 2017, and will remained until August 7.

Moltres, as a Fire- and Flying-type Pokemon, is weak to the following types:

  • Electric
  • Water

Each of these will do 1.4x the usual damage.

Rock-type moves will do 1.96x the damage.

Golem with two Rock-type attacks is the best counter to Moltres, as it's resistant to all of Moltres' attacks and will deal 1.96x damage. Compared to Omastar, it's easier to obtain and has a higher attack power.

Omastar with Rock-type moves is a fantastic counter to Moltres as well though. Like Golem, it's resistant to Moltres' attacks, and if it has Rock-type moves, will do 1.96x damage as well. Even if your Omastar has Water-type moves, it will still do extra damage.

Strong Water-type Pokemon with decent defense like Gyarados, Vaporeon, and Kingdra, if it has Water-type moves, will do well against Moltres. Tyranitar, though it doesn't have access to two moves that are super-effective, will do well along with other favorites like Dragonite.

Lugia first appeared in Raids July 22, 2017, at the conclusion of Pokemon Go Fest. It is unclear how long it will be available. Lugia is especially tough to take down. Plan on having 20 trainers, or at least 8 of very well-prepare, high-level players. Lugia will cease from appearing in Raids on Aug. 31, 2017, and it is unknown when it will appear again.

Lugia, as a Psychic- and Flying-type Pokemon, is weak to the following types:

  • Dark
  • Rock
  • Ice
  • Ghost
  • Electric

Each of these will do 1.4x the usual damage.

Lugia is able to attack with Psychic, Flying, Dragon, and Water-type moves.

Tyranitar would be a good offensive Pokemon to take Lugia on, but you must be especially wary of its Hydro Pump charged attack and plan on manually dodging those, or your Tyranitar may be one-shot.

Jolteon, with Electric-type moves, and Omastar, with Rock-type moves, will also be good choices. Gengar has super-effective Ghost-type attacks, but is weak to Lugia's Psychic-type attacks.

Articuno first appeared in Raids July 22, 2017, at the conclusion of Pokemon Go Fest, and will only be available in its first run until July 31, 2018.

Articuno, as an Ice- and Flying-type Pokemon, is weak to the following types:

  • Electric
  • Fire
  • Steel

Each of these will do 1.4x the usual damage.

Rock-type attacks will do 1.96x the damage, being undoubtedly the best type to attack Articuno with.

Articuno only attacks with Ice-type moves, giving Omastar a fantastic advantage against the legendary bird if it has Rock-type attacks. The Rock- and Water-type Fossil Pokemon Omastar does 1.96x the damage with its Rock-type moves, and is resistant to Articuno's Ice-type attacks.

Houndoom is also resistant to Articuno, and will do super-effective damage with its Fire-type attacks. Tyranitar is also a good choice, taking neutral damage but dishing out super-effective Rock-type attacks.

Other plain Fire-type Pokemon, like Typhlosion and Flareon, are also good choices.

Marvel's Inhumans: "The First Chapter" Review

Share.

Inhumanely bad.

Marvel’s Inhumans is the latest entry in the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this new TV show doesn’t live up to the usual Marvel standard. The Inhumans are a secret society of superpowered people who live on the moon, and while that is admittedly a weird concept, it’s not what holds the show back. It’s the crummy costumes, wooden dialogue and all-around dull delivery of the material.

The story follows the Inhuman royal family of Black Bolt, Medusa, and the rest as they rule Attilan - a hidden city on the moon - until a military coup forces to them go on the run to Earth down below. This might sound like the MCU’s version of Game of Thrones, and it certainly had the potential to be with its superhero monarchy and plays for power, but the show is a disappointment on every level. The costumes and makeup look like a group of friends decided to do Inhumans cosplay the day before Comic-Con. The royal palace, a main setting, looks like a warehouse on the outside and is full of bland, forgettable spaces on the inside. The clunky dialogue sounds like a first draft, not the sharp material you’d expect from the MCU. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the show that first introduced the idea of an Inhuman and which this new show has the thinnest of connections, earned its fans with a quick wit and some slick spy high jinks, whereas Inhumans has no firm tone or personality, it just globs along from one scene to the next.

Marvel and ABC are going big for the launch of Inhumans, releasing the first two episodes in IMAX theaters cut together as a feature-length movie, and then those episodes will air on TV as part of a two-part premiere. The theatrical and TV version will have some differences, although they are reportedly minimal; it seems the biggest change is one storyline is cut out from the IMAX version. This review is based on the IMAX presentation, and will stand as IGN’s review of the first two episodes. That said, if there’s something that makes us reevaluate this score in the TV version, I’ll make note of it here and adjust the score accordingly.

Unfortunately, launching Inhumans as an IMAX movie does more harm than good. The story simply doesn’t have the scope, scale, or polish to make use of such a bold format, and it shows. When the Inhumans flee to Earth, they go to Hawaii - a setting assumedly chosen so they’d have a beautiful place to show off in those super-sized frames. And yes, sure, Hawaii is gorgeous, but it adds nothing to the story, making those big establishing shots feel like something that would be more at home on the Discovery Channel rather than in Marvel’s latest superhero tale. And on top of all that, even though the IMAX version is supposed to be presented as a movie, it still includes episode recap flashbacks halfway through, making me wonder if the editor didn’t get the memo.

The cast includes some talented actors, but they’re buried beneath the show’s glaring flaws, making it impossible to get invested in anyone enough to want to see what happens next. Ken Leung’s Karnak earns the premiere’s only real laughs by always saying what’s on his over-analytical mind, but the confusing first demonstration of his powers will leave you scratching your head. Iwan Rheon’s Maximus is Diet Loki, the jealous, scheming brother of King Black Bolt, but he's given such insidious dialogue and direction that his motivations are immediately obvious. (Also, there’s one scene in particular where it seems no one on set pointed out that Rheon’s accent was coming through.) The writers just didn't know when to quit putting Serinda Swan’s Queen Medusa through the dramatic grinder, resulting in a scene that is unintentionally cringe-worthy. The few action scenes we find the characters in are filled with unimpressive visual effects and tepid choreography. Not even Lockjaw, the obscenely cute, giant, teleporting dog is enough to make you want to sit through another episode.

Showrunner Scott Buck’s previous Marvel credit was Netflix’s Iron Fist, which speaks volumes as to why Inhumans is just as misguided in its approach and execution. Yes, the source material for Inhumans involves a lot of out-there characters and concepts, but ever since Guardians of the Galaxy knocked it out of the park with a talking a raccoon and his tree friend, that can no longer be used as an excuse for why an adaptation didn’t turn out well. It’s clear the show was influenced by the classic Inhumans comic by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee, but the dark, complex and gripping elements that made it great are nowhere to be seen. Even the lighter, more modern Inhumans comics of the past few years feel like they were flipped through without taking the time to truly understand their appeal.

But let me be clear: Inhumans isn’t bad because it’s not a loyal adaptation of the comics. Inhumans is bad because it’s a slog to get through.

The Verdict

Inhumans is bad from top to bottom. Try as it might, the show does not live up to the Marvel brand. It is most definitely not worth seeing in IMAX, and I wouldn’t recommend catching it on TV either.

How to Solve Uncharted: The Lost Legacy's Hardest Puzzles

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy has a number of challenging puzzles. See the answers to each of them below. Some of these puzzles (like the shadow puzzle) can be solved in various ways. We've tried to provide the easiest solution.

If you've found a faster or better way to solve a puzzle, add tips for your solution to this page or let us know in the comments below.

While in the Axe fortress, Chloe and Nadine come across three jumping puzzles. Make a wrong move and Chloe is knocked off the pillar. The key is to make sure the statues swing their weapons when you're out of the way. That way you can safely pass in front of them while they're winding up.

Here's the path for the first jumping puzzle:

Forward, forward, right, left, forward, back, forward, left, forward, forward.

And then for the second jumping puzzle:

Forward, right, left, forward, left, forward, left, right, forward, forward.

And the solution for the third and final jumping puzzle:

Forward, forward, right, left, right, right, forward, right, forward, right, forward, left, left, right, forward, left, forward.

EditChapter 5's Shadow Puzzle

Chloe needs to lineup the shadows with the images on the walls. On the left is Shiva, the axe, and Parashurama. On the right is Parashurama, Ganesh’s severed tusk, and Ganesh.

The 3x3 grid has four pieces on it that you must align properly in order to open the door. The distance from the wall is equally as important as the subject’s placement. Use the images below to solve the puzzle in eight simple steps.

The two black bars in the images below indicate the positions of the two images on the wall. The letters stand for the pieces on the board:

  • S = Shiva
  • P = Parashurama
  • G = Ganesh
  • A = Axe/Tusk

Move 1: From the starting position, you want to move the Ganesh piece toward the Axe using the lever close to the painting that depicts Ganesh's tusk being cut off.

Move 2 and 3: Push the Axe piece toward the Shiva piece using the lever closer to the entrance on the right. Then, push both the Axe and Parashurama pieces toward the tusk chopping painting by using the middle lever on the left side nearest the entrance to the room.

Move 4 and 5: Push the Parashurama piece down away from the axe gifting painting so that it's next to Ganesh. Then, push the Ganesh and Parashurama pieces toward the entrance corner with the bottom lever by the tusk chopping painting.

Move 6 and 7: Push the Shiva piece toward Ganesh. Then, push the Ganesh and Parashurama pieces to the right back toward the tusk chopping painting.

Move 8: For the final move, push the Parashurama piece back toward the axe gifting painting to complete the puzzle.

After Chloe turns the disk in the podium, activate the puzzle parts by pulling the two levers that appear on either side of the door. Doing so opens a third panel above the door. Go back to the disk and you'll be able to rotate the puzzle.

Unlike the fortress puzzles, this puzzle has five layers. Here's what you need to do to solve it.

  • Line up the first layer with the background. Then, line up the second layer with the first.
  • When you get to the third layer you'll see that it rotates the two layers before it. Line them up.
  • Moving on, line up the fourth layer. This one won't rotate any other disks.
  • The final, innermost layer moves the two layers before it. Even though it breaks up the progress you have thus far, you'll want to line up the innermost layer with layers three and four.
  • Cycle back through the layers until you get to layer three. Keep turning this layer until it lines up with layers one and two.
  • At this point all the disks should be aligned, but not with the background. Cycle through the layers back to the first and turn the image until it lines up with the background.

With the image completed, Chloe has one more task to complete. You need to move Ganesh into a yielding position. Move all of Ganesh's limbs to their lowest, most open positions. With Ganesh yielding, you can submit the puzzle.

Parashurama's axe comes down, but stops right before it would have hit Chloe. The platform before her transforms to reveal the tusk of Ganesh. Chloe is held back as Asav retrieves the tusk.
