Sony took its spot at the top of the NPD sales list back again, with the PlayStation 4 coming in as May 2017's best selling hardware platform.
Nintendo Switch, which was the top-selling console for April 2017, was credited with being the "primary catalyst for hardware spending gains" over the same period last year.
In its release, NPD said "the combined installed base of Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One" beats the combined base of the previous generation "by 29 percent."
May's best-selling game was Injustice 2, followed by last month's best-seller, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Somewhat surprisingly, the third best selling game by revenue for May 2017 was September 2013's Grand Theft Auto 5.
Here are the top 10 best-selling games for April 2017, according to The NPD Group.
- Injustice 2
- Mario Kart 8
- Grand Theft Auto V
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Prey 2017
- Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands
- Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia
- NBA 2K17
- MLB 17: The Show
- Overwatch
Of the games making the top 10, Mario Kart 8, Breath of the Wild, Prey, Fire Emblem and Overwatch did not include data for digital sales. Overall, "software dollar sales in May 2017 fell 20 percent," according to NPD, due to the release one year ago of both Uncharted 4 and DOOM.
So far, the two best-selling games for 2017 are still Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Wildlands and For Honor, with Breath of the Wild coming in at third.
While hardware spending was up 7 percent, overall spending was down 11 percent compared to May 2016.
