Writer Tom King | Artist Mikel Janin (DC Comics)
With Batman getting down on one knee in front of Catwoman and popping the big question, there’s one thing he needs to get off his chest before hearing Selina Kyle’s answer: his greatest secret failure, the story of the War of Jokes and Riddles. It’s exactly what it sounds like, a story told in flashback recounting a war waged across Gotham City between the Joker and the Riddler with Batman caught in the middle. Marketing for the story likens it to Batman classics Year One and The Long Halloween, expectations are high going into this big story arc.
The Joker and the Riddler have always had a similar schtick what with the green and purple suits, a focus on trickery and games, elaborate death traps, and a knack for leaving big, obvious clues to their schemes that essentially show Batman how to beat them, so we’re hoping this story settles the score between these two like-minded villains.
Note that this is an oversized anniversary issue, which is why it costs a dollar more than usual.
Writer Dan Abnett | Artist Stjepan Sejic (DC Comics)
Aquaman is also getting the pricier, oversized anniversary issue treatment as the series kicks off the new “Underworld” storyline that sees Arthur Curry as an outlaw on the run from Atlantean authorities. Artist Stjepan Sejic joins Dan Abnett for this new arc and brings his detailed, dramatic storytelling to Aquaman’s undersea world. The striking cover certainly whets our appetite for this new story, pun intended.
And you’ll of course notice the return of Aquaman’s beard, making him look a bit more like his upcoming movie counterpart in Fall’s Justice League film. When the beard is on, you can always bet that Aquaman is in for a rough time because it means he’s in full badass mode.
Writers Kyle Higgins, Ryan Ferrier | Artists Hendry Prasetya, Bachan | Cover Artist Jamal Campbell (BOOM! Studios)
Speaking of badass, in no time at all Lord Drakkon has become a sizable threat to the Power Rangers on par with their most formidable villains. He rules an entire planet in another dimension and wields the combined power of the Green and White Rangers, so we’re both nervous and excited to see him take on Tommy the Green Ranger in a Saba vs. Dragon Dagger battle. At first, the whole “alternate timeline” thing threw us for a loop, but now we see why writer Kyle Higgins dreamed it up: it allows for awesome, never-before-seen encounters like this!
Writer Gail Simone | Artist Cat Staggs (Image Comics)
Fan-favorite writer Gail Simone and the always-excellent Cat Staggs have come together for an original comic book at Image, which honestly is enough to get our money. But we guess we should tell you what it’s about.
Cason is a hitman who wears a suit and works for a crime family. Juniper is a suburban housewife who undergoes all kinds of abuse on daily basis. Their stories are compelling in their own right, but add in a supernatural switcheroo and watch what happens when they swap bodies. It’s Freaky Friday meets Goodfella and one of the best-executed first issues we’ve seen in quite some time.
Keep reading for the third Thor, a new Spider-Man book, and more!
