Why We're Hyped to See Super Mario Odyssey at E3 2017

Take us back to New Donk City.

It's that time of year again: E3 2017 is just on the horizon. From June 10-15, we'll be covering the biggest games and hardware announcements of 2017 and beyond. While you can check out our continually-updated Games of E3 List, we're now going to start diving deeper. Every day leading up to the show, we'll be highlight the stuff we want to see and play at E3 2017. Today's game: Super Mario Odyssey.

The last time we saw Super Mario Odyssey was at the Nintendo Switch presentation on January 13, where it was announced for the Nintendo Switch, with a release date window of “Holiday 2017”.

Mario’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, called Super Mario Odyssey “something a little bit more on the core side” and said it would “go back to the roots” of 3D Mario, which is enough for me. It’s set to feature more open-ended exploration like in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, taking Mario through “an unknown world”. We’ve already seen (and made fun of) New Donk City - a sort of Donkey Kong themed New York that’s populated with humans for the first time in a Mario game - as well as an eclectic bunch of completely different 3D locations, including a forest full of mechanical teapots, or something.

It looks big, beautiful, colourful and totally varied, and paired with classic 3D Mario gameplay, it looks like it’ll make a great addition to the Nintendo Switch. Also, Mario’s hat has eyes now. What’s up with that?

100% - Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told IGN that the game will be playable at E3. Nintendo actually considered having it playable at their Switch reveal events back in January, but decided to go all-in on E3 instead.
