Marvel's Agents of SHIELD is headed for an explosive finale, with SHIELD's best and brightest -- and a familiar fiery friend -- are headed for an epic showdown with this season's main villain, Aida (Mallory Jansen).
To preview what to expect in Tuesday's finale, IGN got on the phone with showrunner Jed Whedon and executive producer Jeff Bell to ask the pressing questions about "World's End." Read our full interview below.
IGN: Obviously the big excitement at the end of the last episode was bringing back Ghost Rider. What can you preview for me of your plans both for his involvement at the end of this season, and if we can maybe expect for him to be around beyond this season?
Jeff Bell: Well, I'll say that you can definitely expect some fire. He usually shows up when innocent blood has been spilled, so, you know, he seems to be the nuclear option. When nothing else will work, Ghost Rider shows up, and … We've got really powerful Aida, and we need some help, so it seems to make sense for him to show up with us.
The other thing that we're trying to do, you know, we've done three pods this season with Ghost Rider and then LMD, and now Framework. And we are the story guys, we need to sort of bring all three stories together at the end to really nail the landing. And so, it also just makes sense. You know, a Ghost Rider, that [arrives] in the first act, has to go off in the third. I think, wasn't that, like, Chekhov who said that? [laughs]
IGN: What can you preview about how these elements -- the Darkhold, Ghost Rider, the Framework, Aida -- are going to come together? Are we gonna get big answers to how these three pods do all connect in this episode?
Jed Whedon: What I think is the unifying thread right now is sort of the Darkhold, you know. When we started this season, our big challenge was, we have these three things we want to do, how are they one thing? And the Darkhold is, has been the answer to that question. It's been this poisonous thing in our midst from the beginning, it sort of originated Robbie's uncle, the villain, and it pushed for the LMD. And it built the Framework. So, Aida now seems to be its last seed, it's creating this thing that is Aida.
Bell: 2.0, 3.0?
IGN: 3.0, I think.
Whedon: You know, I think, because of that, everything's gonna come to a head around it.
IGN:We also haven't officially seen the end of the Framework. What can you sort of preview of what we'll see, you know, before it, I feel like it, inevitably becomes destroyed at the end of the season?
Bell: Well, I mean, you see her at the end of 4-21, waking up in the Framework, and things aren't going well. So she has an agenda that she has given herself, so it's safe to assume she's going to try to do what she wants to do in there. And we'll see if she succeeds.
IGN: Is there a chance that we'll see people like Ward and Trip again in there, or is the focus of the last trip into the Framework really gonna be on Yo-Yo and Mack?
Bell: I would say there's a lot of just presenting stories that we need to resolve, you know. And so, without going any deeper than that, you know, I think her – she wants to find Mack and how she does that I think is something to be determined next week.
IGN: I'm sure we could spend a whole interview talking about things you guys wish you could have done in the Framework but weren't able to do for many reasons. It's such a fun plot device. But is there one big thing that you guys just really wish you could have found a way to work in but were unable to this season?
Whedon: Well, you know, on a sadder note, we would have loved to have John Garrett in there, you know. And losing Bill Paxton was super, was rough on all of us, but it was, to us, even more resonant that we were diving into a world where he could exist. And so, that's one that will always hurt a little bit.
On the fun note, we wanted to bring everybody back, you know? But they all have their own series now. Or they're being nominated for things.
IGN: Where does SHIELD go next, literally? The base is destroyed, again. What can you sort of talk about plans for where you would take these characters next? Is it just rebuilding the base, or do they find a new sort of SHIELD headquarters elsewhere?
Whedon: I'll say that, at the end of the next episode, you'll get an idea.
IGN: Are we going to get a cliffhanger at the end of this season, or is it gonna have sort of a period at the end of it? And what can you tease about how it will cue up plans for Season 5?
Bell: Well, I would say every season, we try to bring the season arc to a conclusion, but we've also tried to then launch, we try to launch something new. Even when Simmons got sucked off to the other planet, I mean, we did finish all the story that season, and we used it to launch something for the next. And I would say, we've done that in the past, and we've done that again.
IGN: What's next for Fitz and Simmons, and how are you guys planning to have the events of the Framework continue to impact Fitz beyond sort of what we saw with him and Simmons last week?
Whedon: Well, we can tell that it's not gonna be easy for him. But we also know from 21 that he will never love anyone else. So, those two things will be in conflict but, you know, they're FitzSimmons. I know, everything I read, people seem to be rooting for them. So, we've put them through their tests and their trials, and, you know, we'll see. There might be a happy ending in their future.
Marvel's Agents of SHIELD's Season 4 finale, "World's End," airs Tuesday, May 16th at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. The series was also just renewed for Season 5.
