Wrestling Wrap Up: Why SmackDown Was a Let Down

Plus, The Rock recreates the first AJ Lee/Paige match (and calls CM Punk), Naomi relinquishes her title, Braun Strowman can wrestle, and more.

There's an ample amount of assorted odds and ends to get to this week, but first on the docket, let's discuss the end of SmackDown Live this week.

...What in the hell?

Let me just say that I'm all in on Luke Harper being the (assumed) contender for Bray's title at WrestleMania. Sure AJ deserves it because we love AJ and want nothing but the moon and stars above for him, but AJ vs Bray isn't all that grabbing. Luke fits into the Wyatt family implosion storyline and I think he's an uber talented dude who could thrive on his own. Plus, Randy may even decide that now, after Luke is named the challenger, he wants to be in the match. To protect Bray. Or, you know, "protect" Bray. Then we get a Wyatt triple threat.

So why not just have Luke win the battle royale this week? Just win it clean? I get that it's to protect AJ somewhat, but doesn't Luke, if he's to be the top challenger now, need a big definitive win? Especially since he's not known for his singles matches or his wins? He's been underutilized back-up most of his career so if he's getting a push let's give him the damn push. A finish like this doesn't make it seem like he can beat Bray.

The end to that battle royal was so wonky. For one, Luke and AJ had to sort of repeat that corner suplex spot because, I guess, they were under-time. Like, they still had a few more minutes and couldn't do the finish right then so then they had to go back in the ring, do some bulls***, and the circle back to the turnbuckle spot.

Secondly, AJ's feet hit first. You could tell that even without getting the full view. And if there was a question regarding who hit first, then just go to the tape? And if there's no tape, why? Why was there no ref out there looking for feet touching the mat? They were in that corner forever. Anyhow, it just felt like there was no real planned spot for the finish. If you wanted it to be a tie or a draw, there are much easier ways to pull that off.

Overall though, I guess I'm just worried about SmackDown's contributions to 'Mania itself. I'm fine with Luke vs. Bray (if they can ever make that official), and I suppose Ambrose vs. Corbin is good (if you're a diehard fan of revving engines in your entrance themes), but are we really getting Cena vs. Miz? That's... odd. Well, if it's happening, I'm solidly behind Miz on this one. I'm honestly looking at him and his promos to make this good.

UNLESS, we'll actually get a mixed tag match at 'Mania featuring Cena and Nikki vs. Miz and Maryse. Granted, we could also just get the guys fighting and the women in their man's corner, but who wants that when they could actually just tag together? After Nikki's now gone through two feuds where her relationship with Cena was her opponent's main talking point, I think it's time for her and John to officially appear together, side by side, on TV.

Also, is AJ vs. Shane still a thing in the works? That hypothetical match has made me roll my eyes ever so slightly since the rumor first popped up. Will it be Shane battling to prove that the Earth is round and not flat like AJ thinks (according to Bryan on Talking Smack)? SmackDown Live is a great show, it just seems like they need to get their s*** in shape for 'Mania. Light and tight, guys. Light and tight.
