The 100: "A Lie Guarded" Review

Field trip to Becca's!

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

Alright, Jasper. You’re being annoying. A different kind of annoying, sure, but come on…

Well, okay, I do like that he’s pranking Jaha and Clarke, which makes the old "Camp Jaha" name for Arkadia feel a lot more literal, complete with wacky hijinks. But the bit with him standing in the rain was frustrating, not to mention predictable as a fake out. Clarke should have been like, “There’s no way they’d kill you at the top of an episode like this!”

Jasper and Monty finding Clarke’s list and the fallout from it was good drama, to be sure, as was them learning neither of them are on it. But I wish at least one of them could see her side of it better. Monty essentially said he could see why she made the decisions she made, but not why she’d make them in the first place. But Monty, dude, you know this is the potential end of humanity here! All of which is to say that it is a good moral quandary in place here, even if Jasper’s going too far with his reactions to, well, everything.

Once Monty let everyone know about the list, Jaha calming them with his “everyone works hard and then there’s a lottery” plan was good one as far as temporarily calming the situation. I’m glad though that Clarke did bring up the, “Hey, what if we end up with only sucky, untalented people?” question (I’m paraphrasing), though for now, there’s no good answer to that. On The 100, there's always a bigger problem to deal with around the corner.

In Polis, Roan deciding that not only was the alliance finished but that it was now all-out war with Trikru and Skaikru felt very sudden, but certainly exciting. Kane may have dropped Octavia from his guard, but methinks he’ll be needing her certain set of skills again very soon. (It was a rather funny understatement when he told her she had a darkness inside her, though decapitating a random person was a pretty good example...)

My favorite part of this fast-paced episode though was the mission to Becca’s lab -- unexpected drone attacks included -- and how it assembled such an interesting group of regular and recurring characters from this show, including Abby, (Eric!) Jackson, Emori, Murphy, Lincoln, Miller, Luna, Raven and Nyko. With such a large cast, many of these characters have rarely, if ever, interacted and it was very cool to see some of them bounce off each other here... and then run for their lives together.

Luna’s “What if the fight is all we are?” question to Raven is an important core debate for The 100 to ask head on. After all, this is a show where those still around have survived, sure, but their life is one battle after another. Realistically, for us at home, that won't end until the show ends, but in the meantime, how do the characters reconcile that fact and feel this is all worth it?

In the midst of this, Raven got more than one big interaction here, not only with Luna, but with her beginning to change her tune on Murphy. While the audience may have learned to come around on this guy, Raven still had an understandable grudge against the guy who, you know, shot her. That being the case, it was nice to see her start to feel a bit differently here.

The discovery of Becca’s fancy lab is a fun curveball, juxtaposed with seeing Echo earlier expressing that the very idea of trying to replicate nightblood is blasphemy. While it seems there will be plenty of other obstacles even if they are successful, at least Luna is on board with this plan for now.

Octavia’s death not truly being her death wasn’t a shock -- this season needs to back off on so many fake outs of one sort or another -- but it was great seeing her and Echo viciously fight each other, after Octavia effortlessly took out the other two Ice Nation guys who pursued her (and Echo’s skull-like war paint was awesome!). Given how this fight ended, I think it’s safe to say a rematch is in order.

Even though Octavia’s survival felt pretty certain, the scene where Bellamy was told she was dead was very well done, with some strong work by Bob Morley, as Bellamy broke down believing his sister was gone.

Bullet points!

-I was horribly remiss in not addressing the introduction of Riley two episodes ago. Riley, who apparently was friends on the Ark with… everyone? Even with characters like Bellamy and Clarke who didn't seem to know each other before the show began. I tried to make up with it with a silly Twitter thread, but in this episode, I loved that Riley was not only back, he was throwing Darcy under the bus! DARCY of all people! (no, we’ve never seen Darcy before either).

-Speaking of “Who is this person?” there were a lot of random red shirts in this episode, though I do believe at least a couple who accompanied the group to Becca’s lab survived! ...for now. The same can’t be said for poor Doug, Bellamy's buddy who got killed by Echo. Oh, Doug, we hardly knew ye! Literally.

-I loved seeing Miller so solidly in command during the approach to Becca’s lab, as we’ve charted that character’s slow but steady ascendance since the show began. The order to protect Luna at all costs was a nice touch as well.

-RIP, Nyko. You seemed like a good guy.

-Tree Adams always does excellent work composing for The 100, but his score in this episode really stood out with the fantastic, emotional music playing as Bellamy learned Octavia was dead - and when we then confirmed she wasn’t quite so dead after all.

The Verdict

A lot is going on here, as the Ice Nation went on the war path, CLarke’s list was found out (and discarded) and Becca’s swanky lab was discovered. While this episode had a couple of areas where things moved a bit too quickly -- not an uncommon issue on The 100 -- much of it was exciting, and there were some cool new character interactions along the way.
